YRRC President's Message.........by Jan Workinger

updated: The 2007-2008 YRRC Winter Series:

Well, the 2007-2008 YRRC Winter Series has come to yet another end, and we had a fantastic year with record participation and some very competitive age groups that weren't decided until the Indian Rock 10k race. Please read the recap in this newsletter from the Winter Series Coordinators, Margaret Moore and Gretchen Walters. Also, please give these ladies a "high-five" the next time you see them, once again these two ladies put on a very professional running series and did an outstanding job. Look out!…..these two are already working on 2008-2009 with some new idea's to make next years series better yet.

On a side note, I want to congratulate Margaret Moore for her recent finish of the 2008 Boston Marathon. For those of you that didn't know this, Margaret qualified for Boston running the Richmond Marathon back in November 07' and in the process, tore some muscle tissue in her right quad. The amazing thing is that Margaret wasn't able to start running again until late February 08' and her longest run was the Springettsbury 15k! Margaret only had little more then 100 miles in the "books" before deciding to give Boston a try that weekend. I must admit, Clay Shaw, Brett Pfleiger and I kind of pushed her into running that day. I did tell her to drop out at anytime her leg wasn't up to the test. Apparently, by all accounts - Margaret was fine and ran a fine performance completing Boston "only" 17 minutes off her qualifying time. Margaret….your awesome!

In the Spring 2008 issue Fast Forward, the official Publication of USA Track & Field, The 50 Best Running Stores in America were listed. Guess what, Greg Baum's Flying Feet store was listed! Kudu's go out to Greg and his excellent Team. Please congratulate Greg and his store members the next time you visit….they do a Great Job! A side bar in recognizing Flying Feet, USA Track & Field also noted that the race team sponsored by Flying Feet includes one of the most diversely accomplished endurance competitors of his era, Clay Shaw. Kudu's for Clay too!

Interesting information:
A new mobile-phone service called Map My Tracks uses GPS technology to track a runner's pace, elapsed time and total time in real time. It can also display a runner's position live on the company's website. Check it out at www.mapmytracks.com.

A sign of the times:

Arlington, VA - As race directors struggle with the RRCA guideline against the use of headphones in RRCA insured events along with the USATF ban on headphones at sanctioned events, the RRCA is encouraging race directors to adopt the new universal NO HEADPHONES symbol on race entry forms and race materials. Created by veteran race director, Jim Gerweck, the goal of this universal symbol is to send the message that event directors are serious about the headphone ban at the events they manage.

"Race officials don't ban headphones to be mean to runners - it's for their own safety and that of everyone else in the race," says Gerweck, a member of the USATF Long Distance Running sub-committee studying enforcement of the ban. "It's an education effort more than enforcement issues, as events such as Grandma's and Twin Cities Marathons have successfully proven. This logo is a simple way to send runners the message that headphones aren't permitted in sanctioned events."

The RRCA has promoted a guideline against the use of headphones in running events that dates back to the mid-1980's and this guideline has been re-affirmed several times by the RRCA membership since then.

"Banning headphones or advising participants to leave them at home or in the car is part of the risk management responsibility of a race director. Many participants do not understand or respect the awesome responsibility a race director shoulders to ensure the safety of every single participant in an event," explains Jean Knaack, RRCA executive director. "Respecting an event director's choice to ban headphones is a shared responsibility of every participant to ensure the safety of all runners, the future success of the event and the sport as a whole."

Note: The YRRC is still reviewing the issue and will make a decision regarding the use of headphones in the 2008-2009 Winter Series at later date.

The Worst Food In America
Their calorie punch is a knock-out!

Recently, an article appeared in Men's Health magazine entitled "The Twenty Worst Foods In America". The article coincided with a night out at the Outback Steakhouse, where the author of the article dutifully ordered an 8 oz. steak and the veggie of the day. During dinner, the author gazed with envy at a fellow diner, who was enjoying the most enormous plate of fries he'd ever seen. As the author munched on the broccoli, he imagined what those delectable strips tasted like. The next afternoon, after reading the article, the author thanked himself for not having eaten a single one, and here's why. Those fries were at the top of the "20 Worst Foods In America" list and after reading their nutritional bio, the author was shocked. Were all restaurant offerings this bad for me/us? Read on, to see where some of your favorites:

Even if you don't know much about nutrition, it should be fairly obvious where these restaurant meals go wrong. They're much too large and nutritionally imbalanced, with layers of sugar, salt and fats added to the foods to improve their taste. Over time, even one or two meals like these each week will find their way to your waistline and create some very serious health issues. Lost touch with what a "normal" serving size is? It can happen even if you don't eat out a lot. Visualize your dinner plate. Now cut it in half and load one half with veggies and fruits. Load the other half equally with a lean protein and a nutritious wholegrain carb such as brown rice. You can also order a product called The Portion Plate (find it online at www.theportionplate.com). This plate maps your foods for you until you get the hang of it on your own. The smartest choice? Avoid restaurant food as much as possible. Save your money and your calories for a fine dining experience every now and then, and watch your portions at home too.

Some important dates to mark in your calendar for 2008 are:

The YRRC picnic date is August 3rd and will be held at the Perch Pavilion at the Lake Redman Boat Launch Area of William Kain County Park in Jacobus. The picnic will be held after the Bon Ton 5 Miler and a picnic lunch will be served starting at 11:00 a.m. and will end at 3:00 p.m. All food and drinks provided by the YRRC.

The Poker Run 5K will be held at John Rudy Park on May 19th at 5:45 p.m. Please bring a covered dish to share. The club will provide hot dogs and beverages. Prizes will be awarded for best poker hands.

The Country Run I will be held on June 9th at Eyster's Machine Shop Pavilion (Rail Trail) at 5:45p.m….between MP 12 and MP 11 in New Freedom. This run will highlight an event called the Prediction Run. What's that you ask? Well, you write down the time you think it'll take you to run a familiar route and leave that piece of paper, along with your watch, behind. When you finish, see how close you came to your prediction. This will be fun with our group, since were running the rail trail, its flat and marked with mile markers…we should see some very close times. The YRRC will award the winner with a prize!

The Country Run II will be held on July 21st at the York Water Company Employee Center on Hess Farm Road at 5:45p.m. Trails are open if interested; the roads are a concern because of increasing traffic and no shoulders on which to run. Also, don't forget to bring swimsuits for swimming in the pool afterward!

Please bring a covered dish to share for both Country Runs. The club will provide hot dogs and beverages.
The YRRC Executive meetings are always open to our club members and non-members to express ideas and/or concerns you might have. However, so that we can schedule time accordingly to hear your message, it's always appreciated if you contact me ahead of time so we can schedule you into our meetings. We start our meetings promptly at 6:30pm and finish at 9:00pm. Below are the remaining YRRC meeting dates for 2008:

June 2nd, August 4th, Oct. 6th, and Dec. 1st. We start our meetings promptly at 6:30pm and finish at 8:30pm.

Note: The June 2nd meeting is at:
The Wellspan Center
915 Indian Rock Dam Road (corner of Indian Rock Dam Road and Richland Avenue)

Run safely….

Best Regards,
